CWmike writes “Microsoft said today that computers in countries with high rates of software piracy are more likely to be infected because users are leery of applying security patches. ‘There is a direct correlation between piracy and the malware infection rate,’ said Jeff Williams, head manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center. Highlighting research that showed worms to be the most prevalent computer security problem today, Williams said the link between PC infection rates and piracy is due to the hesitancy of users of pirated software to use Windows Update. China’s piracy rate is more than four times that of the US, but the use of Windows Update in China is significantly below that in this country. Same for Brazil and France. But Microsoft’s own data doesn’t always support William’s contention that piracy, and the hesitancy to use Windows Update, leads to more infected PCs. China, for example, boasted a malware infection rate — as defined by the number of computers cleaned for each 1,000 executions of the MSRT — of just 6.7 per thousand, significantly below the global average of 8.7 or the US’s rate of 8.2. France’s infection rate of 7.9 in the first half of 2009 was also below the worldwide average.”

Dell, the computer company trying its darnest to re-instate itself
into the minds of the public as a brand that does everything better
for less, has a huge blind spot – its support page.

What should have been a straightforward driver download and
installation turned into a nightmare when, horror of horrors, all the
driver download links on Dell's heavily aspx-ed page turned out dead.

Is it coincidence that aspx sounds like an abbreviated acronym for eXASPerate?

Its a fancy interface that Dell introduces in its information pages as
being more convenient; sure, being able to shortlist the specific
drivers you want and download/email them in a package seems like a
good idea. You know what's an even better idea? Anything that works.

Now of course, you can always find drivers elsewhere on the web.
Which, incidentally, is what i wound up doing after trying the page in
4 different browsers on 2 different operating systems. But it would be
a lot more re-assuring if the drivers came from the company that sold
the stuff in the first place.

Incidentally, Dell used Sigmatel's HD-Audio chips on this mainboard,
which threw all kinds of driver errors on XP's device manager. Or at
least the drivers i got from the other nether regions of the web threw
up these issues.

This was exactly what we saw when we powered up this sony vaio TZ $5000 dollar laptop running on vista.
We where powering up this client’s laptop on this rather beautiful machine expecting it to boot in a second into its operating system.
But it didn’t, In fact we where treated with a vista loading screen that took a whole minute or 2 what happen next…

But it didn’t, In fact we where treated with a vista loading screen that took a whole minute or 2 what happen next is a completely BLACK SCREEN for 20 seconds to 30 seconds.

Me and my engineer was staring at this $5000 machine and this is our exact conversation.

Me: Hey what happen??

Engineer: It went to sleep mode?

Me: Can’t be the power indicator still on and it was booting a while ago?

Engineer: (Action) hit the enter button x 2 (Action) hit the space bar x4 (Action) hit the enter button x 3

Me: wooo.. what the!?!? (Action) hit the enter button x 8

Suddenly a small puny “vista” cursor appeared and it continue take a whole 2 minutes to completely load into the operating system.

Me: (Action)looked my engineer

Me: My goodness!! what kinda loading screen is that?!

Engineer: So this is what $5000 feels like?

Me and Engineer: (Action) Burst into laughter

What can i say, Vista has ruin this $5000 piece of hardware. its like having a elegantly presented tiramisu desert slapped with a piece of lard.

Redmond, you really have to buck up. In a generation where wonderful softwares are free, yours will not last.

Linux has always been associated with complexity and incompatibility. However, every year, we see major improvements made to its usability. Over 20 years into its development, is Linux finally easy enough to use for your average user?

Windows proponents have always maintained that the total cost of ownership of their operating system is lower compared to what their free, open source counterparts have offered for years. They have based this on questionable studies, funded of course by Microsoft itself, and have made suspicious assumptions on the cost of Linux support.

To break down what these studies have said before:
Windows machines are cheaper to run because it is cheaper to find support for because Windows administrators are plenty and cheap to hire.
A longer list of hardware compatibility means that you can find cheaper hardware and be assured that they will work with your setup.

Both these claims still remain true, of course. However, these studies often neglect to quantify the main concerns of running a Microsoft-based setup, namely:
The price of licensing and running Microsoft software.
Productivity of users when using Windows machines compared to Linux

Admittedly, with the popularity of Windows on the personal computers of staff, almost anyone you hire today would have used one form of Windows or the other. Current trends show that 63% of these employees would be familiar with Windows XP or Vista. The question is, how hard would it be for them to transfer this computing experience to Linux?

In the past half a decade, a tiny company called Canonical has been striving to make this transition as smooth as possible. Ubuntu, their custom version of Linux, built on the philosophy of sharing and ease of use, has proved to be highly popular even among complete novices. A quick review of this version of linux shows just how much ground they have covered, even if there is still work to be done making open source figuratively ‘open to the masses’.

The efforts of Canonical have been a major influence on other providers of Linux and open source software. Following in their footsteps, Fedora (built by Red Hat, the largest provider of Enterprise Linux) and even OpenSuse have made strides in user-friendliness and ease of operation.

On the hardware compatibility front, a flurry of interest has been generated by the popularity of netbooks, tiny computers running on equally tiny harddisks and slow processors. These tiny laptops usually have too little power to run the latest version of Windows, driving users to turn to Linux to maximise the functionality of their machines.

Due to the nature of open source software where all changes and updates to the software are contributed for free, this interest in Linux on netbooks has turned the attention of programmers, employees of large corporations and hobbyists alike, to improve hardware compatibility.

Windows will have a short-lived advantage on the remaining considerations of moving to Linux. With the whole of Microsoft’s future riding on their latest release of Windows 7, it remains to be seen if they can stay ahead of customer dissatisfaction generated by Vista. Vista and its performance penalties, extravagant pricing (for full-featured versions) has lost Microsoft substantial potential sales in the enterprise. Most corporations have refused wide-scale adoption of Vista, choosing instead to remain with the 8 year old Windows XP for end users.

For many, it is already too late for Microsoft. Linux, with its many advances in usability, has already begun to exceed Windows in terms of ease of use and functionality. These converts find little reason to return to their reliance on Microsoft as a proprietary software provider, and even less reason to return to paying for software with free alternatives.
